Treblinka Museum of Struggle and Martydom commemorates cruel events from World War 2 period. Two concentration camps were established in Treblinka by Nazis. One camp – Treblinka I, was a penal labour camp where approx 7000 people were executed or died during slave work. Nearby Treblinka II was a death camp with gas chambers where around 800,000 people were killed in 1942 – 1943. Most of them were Jews from Poland. Treblinka II, constructed using German firms, Polish prisoners and Jews, would serve as an elimination center for the Jews of central Europe.

The death camp is widely regarded as the second most important German wartime extermination center. Only Auschwitz-Birkenau is supposed to have claimed more lives.
