Warsaw Jewish Heritage Tour

Home > Tours in Warsaw > Warsaw Jewish Heritage Tour

We recommend this tour for those who are interested in the history of Jewish community in Warsaw before and during World War 2.
The day before the outbreak of World War II, Warsaw was the largest concentration of Jews in Europe. In 1939, for about 1.3 million residents, approx. 360 000 were Jews - which gave about 29% of the total population of Warsaw.
In April 1943, the Germans decided to finally liquidate the ghetto. An uprising broke out in response. The unequal fight lasted over a month. After the fall of the uprising, the ghetto inhabitants were finally exterminated and destroyed. Everything was razed - only a few buildings survived. This closed the history of pre-war Jewish Warsaw. That is why the little things that survive take on extraordinary importance: courtyards, cobbled rails, fragments of walls, and even empty spaces with many addresses.

We offer private guided Jewish Sites tour in Warsaw on request.

The initiative to create the Museum of the History of Polish Jews was born in the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute and gradually gained recognition both in Poland and abroad. Thanks to the support of individual and institutional donors from around the world in 1995, it was possible to start work on the museum project and continue them - as a social initiative - until 2005. The facility began operating at its new headquarters in April 2013, and the permanent exhibition was opened in October 2014.
In September 2014, the Museum added to its name the word "Polin" ("Poland" in Hebrew), referring to the legend of the appearance of the first Jews on Polish soil.
