Poland was the first victim of World War 2. It all started on September 1st 1939 when German army attacked military transit storehouse at Westerplatte in Gdansk. Military struggle in Poland was extremely fierce during whole war which lasted nearly 6 years. It is estimated that 5,5 – 6 million of citizens of Poland were killed during this time including 2,5 – 3 millions of Jews. Warsaw as a city was especially touched by World War 2. On 1 August 1944 the Polish underground Home Army launched an uprising in Warsaw against the occupying Germans. The uprising lasted over two months and led to complete destruction of the city as well as the loss of tens of thousands of lives. As you can imagine there are lots of places in the city today strongly related to those events from terrible war times.
